Disappointments and wise words...

I always knew living in a big city must be safer.

I watched so many hours of French Open quarter final tennis yesterday afternoon and evening that it was late before I switched on the news. When I heard that some middle-aged taxi-driver had taken a hunting rifle and gone on a three-hour shooting spree through the villages of west Cumbria, in the north of England, like most people, I was shocked. This kind of mass murder happens very rarely in the UK, (Hungerford 1987 and Dunblane 1996) because of strict gun laws but when it does happen you have to ask yourself, why and what on earth was this guy thinking?

Eurovision: What is it all about?

I had a party to go to on Saturday night, which meant that fortunately I did not have to watch the Eurovision Song contest. My poor son went to stay at a friend’s house and was forced to sit through the whole thing until 2am Sunday morning. I suppose being forced to sit through this kind of inanity at a young age could be said to be character building. Others might just say it is abuse.

A weekend of water, discrimination and lies....

It was Kataklysmos weekend. That means everyone on the island has to go to the water, even if means sitting on the beach in a fleece because it is too cold to swim! Not wanting to be left out, I took the dog and my son to swim of course, because it was actually quite hot. I have been told that people can get fined in Cyprus for letting their dogs in the water. But what about kids? If you ask me, it is the kids and the adults that pollute the water not the dogs…

I love the Dave and Nick show so far....

Doctors and exercise freaks drive me mad!

I was looking forward to a day at the pool yesterday but naturally, it wasn’t to be. Firstly, the municipal pool in Nicosia, still wasn’t open. Maybe they only open the doors when it is over 40 degrees? I really don’t know. However, when my partner did himself an injury on the tennis court early yesterday morning, things could only get worse. A torn calf muscle is what you get for trying to be healthy.

The foreplay is over, now for the main event!

The evening started with a few glasses of wine and a rather pleasant cocktail party. I got back about 9pm last night. As soon as I walked through the door a friend texted me from London to say that Gordon was making a speech outside No 10. Thank god for the BBC World News channel. I was glued to the TV for the next two hours, with just one more glass of wine.

I really wish Nick would make up his mind.

We had the election on Thursday. It is now Monday and GB is still in power. Why? Well, simply because that is what the constitution says should happen. He is PM until someone else comes along who can form a government. Dave, the man and Nick are trying very hard, (two posh boys together) but it looks like Mr Clegg is swinging both ways at the moment or possibly just two-timing Dave, having secret meetings with GB, in the hope of playing one off against the other and getting the best deal he can.

UK Elections: Things really must get better!

I stayed up until 4am to watch the BBC Election Night Special on the BBC World News channel. When I started watching at 1am this morning, the exit polls predicted a hung parliament in Britain, with the Tories winning the biggest number of seats and the Lib Dems not gaining anything. Unbelievable! It was fascinating TV because no-one believed the polls were accurate. But by 4am when it was clear that it was still too unpredictable to call with huge swings from Labour to Conservative in some seats and smaller swings between different parties in others and the Lib Dems looking like they might even lose seats, I went to bed.

Politics and Pole Dancing make Facebook great!

Nearly 450,000 people have already voted in the Facebook poll, ‘Who do you want to be Prime Minister’. And Nick Clegg is well ahead. I am not convinced that this is any kind of half-way serious prediction of what will happen on Thursday. So what does it tell us? People who normally spend all day tagging their friends in photos, posting their innermost thoughts into cyberspace and downloading applications which tell them which type of dog they are and ‘what type of sex is best for you’ are getting political. This could be said to be empowering!
