A glimpse of bygone life
The photos, some of which will be published this week in the Sunday Mail, show how people then lived, worked and relaxed.(Photo: Richard Chamberlain) NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN pictures of Cyprus are revealed in a new book called "Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life 1954"
The author, British pensioner Richard Chamberlain, discovered a stash of photographs he took whilst serving in the army in Cyprus 57-years-ago. The find is providing a fascinating glimpse of bygone life.
Some of the photographs will be published this week in the Sunday Mail and show how people then lived, worked and relaxed. From street scenes of old Famagusta, to motoring in the Troodos Mountains - the book provides a real treasure trove of memories of daily life.
Other sections include snaps of a dust track known as “Nicosia Airport”, Famagusta port, the Queen’s 1954 Birthday Parade, places of worship and ancient Salamis. The book is available from Moufflon in Nicosia.

JEWISH CAMPS – LOOSE ENDS
If you’ve been following the ongoing story of the search for the location of Jewish internment camps, you may be interested to know that it was sixty-five years ago this week in 1946, that the camps opened their gates.
Gary Gumpert and Susan Drucker have been researching the subject for the past fifteen years and have emailed the say that their documentary “Memories in Cypriot Soil” which details the history of the camps is nearing completion.
