Grab a bargain and make some cash
The thrift shop on Dhekelia base hands proceeds from sales back to sellers as well as supporting local charities. ALIX NORMAN rifles through the packed shelves Much like tea and Marmite, it seems the British take their thrift shops with them wherever they travel. I’ve visited at least five on the island, from the Saturday morning jaunt at St Paul’s to PAWS charity shop in the Paphos district. But my favourite has always been on the Dhekelia British Base, tucked away down a turning just before the famous fish and chip shop. ... Read on

Tattooing her way around the world [with video]
Growing up with a love of art, one Nicosia bases tattooist now creates great pieces on a growing clientele says ALIX NORMAN Erika Malmgreen confounds my expectations. Admittedly, my familiarity with body art is limited to LA Ink but I did not expect a tattoo artist to be quite so unaffected, well-spoken and chic. Perhaps it’s her sensible Scandanavian heritage, or the fact that she’s travelled the world and absorbed a wealth of cultures that make Erika so unexpected in a profession more often associated with middle-aged men and dodgy bikers... Where do you live?I live in Aglanjia with my wife, our three children and our dog Best childhood memory? That summer night in 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the neighbourhood kids, my two younger brothers and I were trying to spot the space capsule orbiting around moon with naked eye. Some of the kids claimed they could see it but not me. And I remember I got so upset because of that. Many years later, when I was studying in the US, on the anniversary of the first moonlanding, I found a collective 25 cent coin on the ground depicting the first US astronaut landed on the moon. ... The Dating Diaries: The first reactions
To my amazement, within two days of posting my online dating profile there followed a torrent of despair, desire, tragedy and longing. It was there for all to read in the applications coming my way. The age bracket turned out to be totally irrelevant; the youngest lady was 19, the oldest 70. I also learned that many stunningly beautiful and willing white ladies had recently immigrated to Ghana, truly a country of great climate and attraction. Frankly I can’t blame them. A gorgeous Native American white lady had, according to her profile, of all places lived in Greenland. She told me frankly and ‘viri convitenzili’ that it was, not unexpected to me, too cold in Greenland... Read on
