Larnaca concert for the needy
LARNACA Municipality and Kiti Metropolis are organising a concert on Monday, May 27 in cooperation with the local communities of Aradippou, Lefkara, Athienou, Leivadia and Dromolaxia–Meneou in an effort to collect food for the needy. The concert named ‘Together for Larnaca and for our common man’ will take place on the Phinikoudes beach and will be opened by the philharmonic orchestra at 4pm. From 6pm until midnight well-known artists from Cyprus and Greece like Anna Vissi, Evridiki and George Theophanous, amongst others, will perform popular hits for the crowd... 1 comment

Defence minister shocked at number of needy in Larnaca
DEFENCE Minister Fotis Fotiou expressed his shock at the hundreds of people queuing up to get aid from the Larnaca community market, after his visit there yesterday. The minister said he expected plans to give surplus ready-meals from army camps around the island to needy families to come into effect very soon.“I am shocked at the number of people here at the market but I am truly pleased by the work done by the Mayor, the town council, volunteers and everyone else who has contributed which is truly deserving of congratulations,” Fotiou said. ... 8 comments

Two holiday homes burgled in Tsada TWO holiday homes belonging to an Irishman and British man were burgled in the Tsada community in Paphos on Tuesday night.The thieves made off with various valuables estimated to be worth €17,300. According to a police spokesman, the Irishman’s house was broken into when the balcony door was jarred open. The burglars took two mobile phones valued at 1,000. The holiday home belonging to the British man had a ruby and diamond ring stolen which was valued at €15,000. Two new computers and €1,000 in cash were also taken after robbers managed to get in through a window, which was closed but unlocked.Police said both homes were insured for theft. Caught red-handed A 34-YEAR-OLD man from Mammari was arrested yesterday in Larnaca after being caught red-handed stealing electronic devices from an abandoned hotel on the Larnaca – Dhekelia road.According to police, a security guard realised that the hotel door was open and alerted police who went to the scene. The robber saw the officers coming and hid in a kitchen cabinet. Police found him and decoders and some other electrical devices wrapped in a sheet.The 34-year-old is expected to appear before the Larnaca district court for a remand hearing. Man injured by fireworks
A 21-YEAR-OLD from Larnaca was taken to hospital yesterday after injuring himself with fireworks, one of which backfired, burning his face, his left hand, and bruising his left eye, police said.The young man was trying to set-off the fireworks opposite the Faneromeni Church in Larnaca where the traditional ‘Lambradja’ bonfire was being prepared for tomorrow night. Accident at Larnaca building site
TWO MEN, a Greek-Pontian and a Georgian, were rescued by the fire service yesterday after a wall collapsed on them at a building site near the old GSZ Stadium in Larnaca. It took firemen 45 minutes to free the Georgian man from the debris. Deputy direct of the fire service, Marcos Trangolas said that around 1pm, Larnaca fire station received reports that a wall had collapsed, trapping two people. The disaster response squad (EMAK) vehicle and Larnaca’s fire service rescue vehicle were both called into action.“After arriving on the scene, members of the service established that one of the two men had been trapped under a large cement beam which had collapsed as part of the site’s structure,” Trangolas said. ... 3 comments

Stricter food aid controls
OVER 2,000 applications for food aid have been submitted to the community market set up by the Larnaca municipality to help the poor, resulting in the need for a stricter screening process. Larnaca mayor Andreas Louroudjiadis told Cyprus News Agency that the large number of people needing help has forced the local authority to enforce a stricter application process. Only those who have filled in the relevant application form will have access to the free food supplies, said Louroudjiadis. Forms can be found at the community market while a special committee is responsible for evaluating each application. Work death A 76-YEAR-old man was killed yesterday in a work accident after he climbed up a ladder to prune bushes at the Protaras hotel where he worked. Damianos Kosta from Liopetra climbed up the metal ladder at around 11am. In circumstances still under investigation, the 76-year-old, who was responsible for general maintenance at the hotel, fell from three metres onto the ground, ending up in the swimming pool filled with water. His colleagues got him out of the pool and took him to Famagusta hospital to be treated for brain and chest injuries. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was transported to Nicosia general hospital where he died around early evening. An autopsy will be performed tomorrow. ... 1 comment
