President toasts Jewish community but warns on north
PRESIDENT NICOS Anastasiades yesterday raised a glass to celebrate ten years since the establishment of the Cyprus Jewish Community Centre in Larnaca while also warning his hosts not to engage in any illegal activity in the occupied north. THE United Nations (UN) is very sympathetic towards the struggle the Cypriot people now face, UN Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer said yesterday after a meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace.Downer said he hopes to announce a dinner between President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu after his meeting with the latter today. President responds to Draghi on Central Bank Governor
PRESIDENT NICOS Anastasiades has written a letter to European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi allegedly listing the shortcomings of Cyprus’ Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades, it was reported yesterday. In the initial letter, which was also sent to House President Yiannakis Omirou, Draghi reminded both men that a central bank governor could only be dismissed on grounds specified by EU law, adding that any dismissal would be subject to review by the EU’s Court of Justice. Speaking on Sunday, Anastasiades said he planned to inform Draghi about some incidents which he hoped would be taken to heart, hinting that had there been the proper supervision by European institutions, Cyprus wouldn’t be in the position it’s in now. ... 5 comments

Final haircut figure expected tomorrow
OFFICIALS at the Central Bank will work through the weekend to come-up with a final percentage for the levy on uninsured deposits of over €100,000 at Bank of Cyprus, it was reported yesterday.An announcement is expected tomorrow. The decision is dependant on calculations regarding the offset of loans against deposits according to head of internal audit at the Central Bank, Yiangos Demetriou. THE CLINCHING of a final deal with the troika of international lenders on Tuesday sparked a fully-fledged blame game between ruling DISY, and opposition AKEL yesterday, even prompting President Nicos Anastasiades to join in.Each side blamed the other for the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and each said the other had brought the country to ruin.
