‘Holiday at home this year’ residents urged

The tourism industry is urging residents to holiday at home this year to help beat the crisis.The head of the Paphos regional board of tourism Nassos Hadjigeorgiou said this would be the message given to everyone who attends the three-day annual travel exhibition ‘Taxidi’ which opens in Nicosia today.“In particular the Paphos tourism board is urging Cypriots and locals to spend the summer at home this year,” he said.Hadjigeorgiou said officials are still unsure as to how the domestic market will react to the crisis. Tourism still numb from banking crisis

THE ASSOCIATION of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) has said that despite a 20 per cent decrease in reservations since the banking crisis in March, there had been a turnaround in recent days. Push to boost tourism from Holland

OFFICIALs from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) met with the heads of the Dutch Association of Travel Agents along with journalists from the country’s three biggest newspapers yesterday in an attempt to attract tourists from Holland.Speaking after the meeting, head of the CTO Alecos Oroundiotis said that the meeting took place as the organisation is making attempts to reverse the negative image the island is suffering from in light of recent  economic developments. He added that both sides took part in a very constructive meeting regarding the arrival of Dutch tourists and promoting Cyprus in the Dutch tourist market... 16 comments

Those in tourism still see hope in Russian market

THE ECONOMIC crisis seen in Cyprus over the last month will most certainly impact upon the eastern promise of a growing Russian tourism market though opinions within the industry appear to differ over the degree.One tourism operator who did not wish to be named said he was in Russia recently visiting tour operators and was implored by companies there to pass on the message to the Cyprus authorities to counteract the negative marketing enacted against the country.“Unfortunately, our competitors are capitalising on our situation, saying we have strikes, people are screaming in the streets and there is general upset and insecurity here. Plan to hire more Cypriots in tourism

SEVEN in ten people hired in the hotel industry will now be Cypriots as part of an EU-funded scheme, commerce minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis said yesterday. He was briefing the House Commerce Committee on measures to support the tourist industry – one of the biggest contributors the Cyprus economy – at a time of austerity and cutbacks. Lakkotrypis said that President Nicos Anastasiades was due to announce a raft of measures today on the economy, including the plan to increase employment in hotels for Cypriots. The labour minister and hoteliers had already agreed on the plan, which "will make a difference," Lakkotrypis said. ... 7 comments

Cyprus tourism officials in Russia to ease concerns

THE EUROGROUP decision to impose a levy on Cypriot banks has caused a slew of  concerns from tourist agents in Russia and the UK according to the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO). A group of CTO representatives led by CTO chief Alecos Orountiotis and general-manager Marios Hannides left for Moscow yesterday where they will participate in Russia’s Tourism Exhibition due to begin today.
